It’s a fungus!
The fungus is known as the honey mushroom, or armillaria solidipes.
Scientific American’s Annie Casselman wrote about the massive and very old fungus, which was discovered in 1998 by a team of forestry scientists.
To give a sense of the size of the largest known armillaria solidipes in Eastern Oreogon’s Blue Mountains, Casselman wrote that, “this humongous fungus would encompass 1,665 football fields, or nearly four square miles (10 square kilometers) of turf.”
