BEND, Ore. — An Oregon dog whose spine was damaged in a trap and who became a symbol of a push to tighten state trapping rules has been euthanized.
She was an 8-year-old, 38-pound wheaten terrier named Kieri (KIH-ree).
The Bend Bulletin reports that she and her owner were on a bird-watching walk in February when she was caught along a Central Oregon trail by a device meant to kill otters and beavers quickly.
Despite two surgeries, she was in pain and was euthanized Tuesday.
She is among a half dozen dogs reported caught in traps last winter in Central Oregon, three times more than usual.
The state Fish and Wildlife Commission meets next month to review its rules and consider changes to keep pets safer.
